From Charlie’s SuperCamp newsletter. I don’t think that becoming “set in my ways” is a significant issue – at least not this year. When people say they don’t have a very good memory, they’re actually talking about recall. They have difficulty recalling events or information from the past. There are several factors that affect recall. Dan Mikels believes that many people lose their ability to remember as they grow older because they stop “landmarking.” Landmarks, say … more

Good evening all, The Basketball B Team travelled to St. George’s Tuesday May 5 and won a close, back and forth game, 28-22. Led by Mustafa Pacaci (8 points), Lucas Shepherd (6 pts), and Charlie DeLapa (6 pts), the guys overcame hot, humid conditions to prevail. Big thank you to Mike DeLapa for making the journey and volunteering to referee the entire game! Final game of the season (B team) is planned for Saturday May … more

Great games yesterday in Ostia (last train stop Chrisoforo Columbo) at the Sand Volleyball Academy with new friends Francesco d’Orlando, Fabrizio Bontà, and Massimiliano Dattoli. Followed by dinner with Lauren Spurrier and her friend Rab from Pakistan. Charlie labored away on an architectural model of Hadrian’s Villa for his Roman Topography class as well as on other homework. I think I had the better day.

No school. Day trip to: The catacombs of St.Callixtus are among the greatest and most important of Rome. They originated about the middle of the second century and are part of a cemeterial complex. They are named after the deacon Callixtus who, at the beginning of the third century, was appointed by pope Zephyrinus as the administrator of the cemetery and so … more

Went to a party on Saturday night with Ben Stiller, Kirsten Wiig (who I never heard of until that night), the cast of Zoolander 2, and the cast of Ben Hur at the house of David Lane, U.S. Ambassador the U.N. Thought I should watch the original Zoolander so I had some context, albeit belated. Stupid genius.
I spent most of the night talking with Kathleen Dougherty who has been nominated to be the new U.S. Ambassador to Cypress; her friend Becky Ortiz from Columbia, who previously studied at MIIS and took classes from Bill Monning; John and Jackie Norris, Jackie the former Chief of Staff to Michelle Obama and John now working with David Lane; and other government and political operatives. I met a couple of the make-up crew, Ben’s make-up artist Bernadette and hair stylist Alan. On my way out, I chatted with Sicilian actress Electra something or other who wore a black veil and exuded mystery.
One of those wonderfully strange evenings where celebrity and government collide in magical ways. Reminded me a bit of my years with State Senator Gary Hart (”El Otro”), he being completely unphased by anyone except professional athletes.
